Billy Dee Williams grew up in Harlem, New York City where his family nurtured his artistic abilities. He made his acting debut on Broadway at the age of seven and also in his school years he attended the High School of Music and art. He was awarded the prestigious Hallgarten Award Scholarship to attend the National Academy of Fine Arts and Design.  In order to earn money to buy art supplies, Billy Dee Williams pivoted to acting despite the opposition of his art professors and thus forth became a well-known performing actor.

He has had numerous exhibitions and recognition across the United States. His paintings are included in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Gallery, Washington DC, the Schomburg Center for Research and Black Culture, New York, African American Museum, New Orleans, the Museum of Jazz, Kansas City and private collections.
