”HomeFront and other Memories” -a solo exhibition by Kimberly Binns, explores the Black family homestead as resistance, at Haugabrooks Gallery in the King Historic District. The exhibition opens with a public reception on Friday, February 17th, 6-8 pm.
In this exhibition, Kimberly Binns reflects on how Black townships, post-Emancipation freedmen's towns and urban safe havens became the targets of systemic erasure and how these very policies continue to reverberate in Black communities today. The series draws from historical archives of erased Black townships in the metro-Atlanta area, to celebrate the example of the Black homestead as resistance.
The work will be on view through March 31, 2023, at the newly repurposed historic Haugabrooks Funeral Home, now a fine arts gallery and events space in the King Historic District. Curator Charmaine Minniefield, presents this exhibition within a February series of community-based programming leading up to the Praise House Project in the metro area in 2023. This exhibition also announces Binn’s 2023 art and technology residency with the Fulton County Futures Lab and her collaboration with the Historic District Development Corporation (HDDC) to design a digital media lab for creatives on the lower level of the newly repurposed historic Haugabrook.
