20 x 16 x 1/2 inches, acrylic and spray paint on canvas (2021) -- unframed

Chris Van Loan Sr. was raised in Philadelphia but currently lives in the Austin, TX area. He has been involved in several artistic pursuits including, music, filmmaking, and painting.

His artistic career began as a musician (guitarist) which gave him the opportunity to interview John Mayer and meet and review the music of Anais Mitchell in the early stages of their careers.

As a filmmaker, he was inspired by his relative, Roger Ross Williams – the first African American to win an Oscar for directing. In 2014,Chris co-directed a short documentary about life and music entitled “Close to the line” which won the Best Short Documentary award at the Capital City Black Film Festival.

Then, motivated by a call for art work inspired by the song “Little Boxes” by Malvina Reynolds, Chris began painting. Painting has become his primary form of artistic expression as it allows him to meditate and be a conduit for creation.

As a self-taught painter, his work is influenced by several sources including, spray paint art, geometric abstracts and hip hop. He often uses found objects like pieces of old light fixtures and kitchen utensils to create patterns and impressions on his canvases.

His art work has been displayed in several exhibitions and hangs in collections at the Pfizer Corporation, Fox Broadcasting, and the Freedom Mortgage Company. Chris is also a military veteran and has curated several exhibitions for military and veteran artists and their families.
