I’ve enjoyed a successful career as a mixed media artist whose works are deeply rooted in African-American Southern culture. Recently, i’ve entered a new period, one that incorporates found materials into clay sculpture. While I began sculpting in the early 1990s, incorporating works in clay and assemblage of modern and contemporary finds from thrift stores and flea markets became a new muse in December 2015. Working constantly to keep up with inspiration, I’ve created more than fifty pieces in the last six months. Materials incorporated into sculptures invoke a sense of place, whether using burn wood from Columbus’ Swift Mill fire where I currently reside or decades-old bamboo canes from New Orleans. Though styles range from realism to abstract, each piece shares the vitality and powerful presence that can only be expressed in three-dimensional art. #movingearth #playingwithmud #najeedorseyart
