In response to the ambition and power of the art historical and contemporary figurative work, I impart sensitive and emotionally rich works that add to my own experiences. I bring to my figurations a probing element of paper-making and collage. I tend to work large-scale and enjoy layering the surface, informing the structure and emanating a stream of consciousness of sorts. I describe an inner dialogue towards my subjectivity, using text and journal entries, as well as metaphorical imagery. The paintings are active in exploring different modes of working that offer a hands-on approach to molding the material. The impermanence of life and its creations are an engrossing enigma within my paintings and therefore I attempt to augment presence. Through the representation of my immediate surroundings, relationships, memories, thoughts, and sentiments I provide them with importance and influence. In all, my work is a pure and consummate search for who I am and an eloquent practice of telling my story.

"Fond Memories" by Najee Dorsey

30 x 20 inches, photomontage, digital collage on premium archival paper, limited edition of 10 signed and numbered, pigment print on hahnemuhle fine art baryta paper 325 gsm -- unframed (2024)

About the Photomontage Works

Najee Dorsey’s photomontage works are original fine art prints created through a deliberate process of visual construction. Lawrence was introduced to art when in his early teens, Lawrence's mother enrolled him in Utopia Children's Center, which provided an after-school art program in Harlem. By the mid-1930s, he was regularly participating in art programs at the Harlem Art Workshop and the Harlem Community Art Center where he was exposed to leading African American artists of the time, including Augusta Savage and Charles Alton, the director of the Harlem Art Workshop and, later, professor of art at Howard University. At the community art centers, Lawrence studied African art, Aaron Douglas's paintings and African American history. With the help and encouragement of Augusta Savage, Lawrence secured a scholarship to the American Artists School and later gained employment with the WPA, working as a painter in the easel division. Lawrence began painting in series format in the late 1930s, completing 41 paintings on the life of Toussaint L'Ouverture, the revolutionary who established the Haitian Republic. Other series followed on the lives of the abolitionists Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and John Brown. The Migration of the Negro, one of his best known series, was completed in 1941. The most widely acclaimed African American artist of this century, Lawrence continued to paint until his death in 2000.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0261/3941/files/to-preserve-their-freedom-from-the-toussaint-l-ouverture-series-1988.jpg?v=1770399733
catlett-elizabeth-congo-square
Catlett, Elizabeth, (Congo Square)

"Congo Square" by Elizabeth Catlett

29 x 35 inches, silkscreen print on paper, limited edition of 500, signed (2000) --framed

In a career spanning more than 70 years, Elizabeth Catlett has created sculptures that celebrate the heroic strength and endurance of African-American and Mexican working-class women. Recently, i’ve entered a new period, one that incorporates found materials into clay sculpture. While I began sculpting in the early 1990s, incorporating works in clay and assemblage of modern and contemporary finds from thrift stores and flea markets became a new muse in December 2015. Working constantly to keep up with inspiration, I’ve created more than fifty pieces in the last six months. Materials incorporated into sculptures invoke a sense of place, whether using burn wood from Columbus’ Swift Mill fire where I currently reside or decades-old bamboo canes from New Orleans. Though styles range from realism to abstract, each piece shares the vitality and powerful presence that can only be expressed in three-dimensional art. #movingearth #playingwithmud #najeedorseyart

Born and raised in the Delta and now a resident of the Columbus area, Najee Dorsey has shown his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Benny Andrews, a native of Plainview, began experimenting with collage as a student at the Art Institute of Chicago during the 1950s. His 1994 work Preacher, oil and collage on canvas (48'' x 28''), is housed at the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta.Preacher Although he moved to New York in 1958, his formative years in Georgia continued to inform his work. Andrews explored American life in his collages, prints, paintings, and drawings by fusing memory and imagination. Andrews was born on November 13, 1930, in Plainview, a small farming community three miles from Madison. His mother, Viola, instilled in her ten children the importance of education, religion, and freedom of expression; his father, George, a self-taught artist, fueled their creativity with his drawings and illustrations. Although the entire family worked in the cotton fields as sharecroppers, Viola Andrews was adamant that her children attend school. Andrews's attendance was sporadic because he went only when he wasn't needed in the fields or when it rained.

Information Wanted - Nina, Ada, & Suky by Beverly Smith

31.75 x 55 inches image size (framed size 44 x 66..5") hand embellished reproduction limited edition artist proof #02 of 06 --framed

Beverly Smith, my creative works originate from my love of African and Southern American textiles. Hailing from Blytheville, Arkansas, Dorsey’s practice is rooted in photomontage, mixed media, and layered visual storytelling. Working across photographic elements, found textures, digital collage, painting, and assemblage, Dorsey builds richly constructed images that move between personal history and collective memory. His work explores Black resistance, Southern memory, migration, music, and ancestral presence through visual worlds shaped by juke joints, lived interiors, cotton fields, and crossroads.

Dorsey’s photomontage works extend this practice through a deliberate process of visual construction.
