In response to the ambition and power of the art historical and contemporary figurative work, I impart sensitive and emotionally rich works that add to my own experiences. I bring to my figurations a probing element of paper-making and collage. I tend to work large-scale and enjoy layering the surface, informing the structure and emanating a stream of consciousness of sorts. I describe an inner dialogue towards my subjectivity, using text and journal entries, as well as metaphorical imagery. The paintings are active in exploring different modes of working that offer a hands-on approach to molding the material. The impermanence of life and its creations are an engrossing enigma within my paintings and therefore I attempt to augment presence. Through the representation of my immediate surroundings, relationships, memories, thoughts, and sentiments I provide them with importance and influence. After graduating, I took some time away from art to explore elements within my surrounding environment to really find myself. In 2008, I found myself longing to pick up a brush. After experimenting, I quickly fell in love with the experience of using oil-based medium and found the energy to create all over again. The new medium renewed the passion I thought I had lost coming into the busy working world.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eI take inspiration for each body of work from both history and everyday life experiences. I work to create a narrative in my art that can also be subjective in its meaning. Art for me is about allowing the viewer to grasp onto their own interpretation. I believe firmly that art is universal and is shaped by each individual’s own walk of life. I define myself as an introspective figurative artist. I enjoy incorporating natural motifs, including using floral fabric patterns to express the communication chakra at the neck of the figures as a form of self-expression, determination in one’s pursuit of better living. Each stroke of paint is meant to be bold, show confidence, strength in both my figures, and inspire the same mindset in those who view it. There are many artists that I find most inspiring and have affected the elements included in my own works, such as Dali, Kevin Williams, Charley Palmer, David Hockney, Basquiat, and Amy Sherald. Often, I also find myself looking back on techniques seen in works of different eras as well. I choose to express myself through quilts because of their historic and functional significance. Quilts not only provide warmth and comfort, but can act as documentation of unaltered truths.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\" style=\"float: left;\"\u003e I enjoy preserving my Southern heritage by emulating the custom of layered garment quilt tops. I am particularly interested in garments known as White Welsh Plains, created specifically for Blacks during slavery to restrict certain clothing, based on the South Carolina Act of 1735. My designs usually start with a visual expression that is a contradiction or connection to time and circumstances that provide an opportunity to give voice to the richness of the spirit of human survival.
